James Merson

Meet James Merson

James Merson provides high quality criminal defense representation to people all over northern Colorado that have nowhere else to turn.

Mr. Merson proudly served as a public defender in the Greeley Regional Office of the Colorado Public Defender for 14 years.  During his time as a public defender, Mr. Merson gained extensive experience as a litigator.  He has handled thousands of cases, litigated hundreds of suppression and motions hearings, and taken over 100 cases to jury trial.  He has handled everything from simple misdemeanors to homicides.  He has also handled several appeals in Weld District Court, the Colorado Court of Appeals, and the Colorado Supreme Court.  While in law school in 2004, Mr. Merson was the first certified intern to argue a case before the Washington Supreme Court.  In 2010, he was honored with the “Attorney of the Year” award from the Colorado Public Defender for outstanding service as an attorney.  He was selected for this award out of hundreds of attorneys in the Colorado Public Defender System.

In addition to being a trial attorney for the Colorado Public Defender, he was also was appointed as a county court supervisor and office head of the Greeley Regional Office of the Colorado Public Defender.   In this role, he was  responsible for managing and training many new trial attorneys.

​Mr. Merson has also taught trial advocacy classes at the University of Colorado School of Law and lectured about criminal defense to numerous college classes.  He has also been a part of various work groups within the criminal justice system, including the 19th Judicial District Criminal Justice Advisory Committee.  He frequently volunteers for the Boulder Bar Association’s “ask a lawyer” program.
